A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the best known co-ed high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already gained a reputation as a teacher with instructional techniques that inspired and encouraged the students in her class to learn and to think.
As an illustration, one Monday morning at 10:00 she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about some of the most familiar signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the higher the probability that she or he is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then told the members in the class that each individual would be responsible for investigating four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members by way of a six minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her students to study the list and rank the top eight alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she reviews the results, she will discuss her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to go over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost everyone in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, just about every student disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, to be exact, "Do you feel extremely sick when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her pupils why this answer was the most accurate sign of alcoholism. She pointed out the fact that the foremost difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Essentially this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden quits drinking, he or she will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcoholic, the pupils started to understand the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the enthusiasm displayed by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had stimulated and motivated her students to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
