A Young Gentleman Needs Therapy For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug And Alcohol Addiction
About eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences intense depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship issues.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he in actual fact has no driving force to do much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of graduate school in genetics.
Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can address his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something healthy about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol dependency treatment that results in long-term sobriety.
It may be asked how counseling would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are a number of recently produced doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the alcohol and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the different stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is utterly nothing useful about drug addiction and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, deteriorating health, legal problems, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him manage these psychological issues more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has exhibited.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the grit to carry out much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he desperately needs a little hope for a better existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the therapy he requires for his extreme depression and addiction and continue with his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be overwhelmed in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to refrin from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol therapy and get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with self-respect, direction, and passion.
More solid relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to seek the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
