A Young Woman Overcomes Her Depression, Gets Alcohol Treatment For Her Hazardous And Heavy Drinking, And Fortifies Her Self Esteem
Emily was a forty-seven-year-old real estate agent who was tired of feeling depressed on a daily basis and sick of her abusive drinking behavior. Simply put, she hated the hangovers she experienced on a regular basis, she was tired of going through broken relationship after broken relationship due to her careless drinking, she was irate with herself for spending her hard-earned money on a worthless habit, she missed her old motivation for doing the things she enjoyed, and she was sick of feeling lethargic every morning.
In addition to the obvious alcohol-related health issues she was experiencing, almost certainly the worst part of her drinking behavior was the unreliable and deceitful individual she had become. In her heart she knew that she had been less than honest about her drinking activities with family, friends and relatives and she also knew she had been deceitful with herself about the "positive" effects of drinking. What is more, she justified wolfing down two or three alcoholic beverages before going to social events and she also made excuses for needing four or five drinks the first thing in the morning so that she could deal with the "pressures" at work. Stated simply, Emily got to a time in her life when she finally saw that she hit a low point in life and was now prepared to start the slow and gradual climb back to health.
One of basic ways that Emily operationalized her "plan" was by asking for a transfer at her workplace. When her request was approved, she moved 950 miles away to a different city. If nothing else, this certainly made making new friends and pals and dissociating herself from her old pals much easier. Then she contacted a healthcare professional in her new town and scheduled an appointment for a comprehensive mental and physical examination.
After meeting with the physician and taking a number of lab tests, it became painfully apparent that Emily had made the transition from alcohol abuse to dependency on alcohol and, as a result, really needed alcohol rehab and alcohol detox. At this time, her physician made it a point to discuss the diverse alcoholic symptoms and the typical symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to taking a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the healthcare professional also told Emily that her mental health evaluation revealed that she was clinically depressed and in need of counseling for her medical condition.
Due to her willingness to follow through with the rehabilitation program, after twelve weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Emily was ready to initiate treatment on an outpatient basis. At this point in time, she started working at her new job and over the weeks began revitalizing her body by exercising, drinking filtered water, eating healthy foods, living an alcohol-free way of life, and taking vitamins and minerals.
After just about ten weeks of outpatient rehabilitation during which time she never suffered through an alcohol relapse, Emily quit going to alcohol treatment and instead started going five times per week to local AA meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily maintain her alcohol-free way of life, they provided her with the support she wanted, and they served as a constant reminder of the adverse results that are associated with hazardous and careless drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now wonderful and full of possibilities that she could have never longed for or realized while she was involved in hazardous and careless drinking behavior.
