Everybody has their evaluations. We start forming likes and dislikes from a very early age. Some of our evaluations are formed based upon our own experiences & others we form based upon what we hear from the people around us. Kids readily pick up what the grown-ups around them are saying. That is why most family members belong to the same political party and practice the same religion; it's what they grew up with. A whole lot of what we value comes from what we were exposed to as children. Now & again we find that we change our opinion on something once we have experienced it for ourselves because the opinion was based upon what we were taught rather than from personal experience.

In the family I spent my childhood in my father liked to have things quiet. He worked extremely hard at his job & running a farm so when he sat down for the evening he did not like a fantastic deal of noise or activity going on around him. We could have the tv on low or he would put on albums of classical music. It was the only music he would listen in to. If we had the radio on and western-country music, even country wedding songs, or rock & roll would come on he would tell us to turn it off. He did not understand rock and roll and he thought country-western music was hokey, even the love ballads & country wedding songs. I was exposed to rock and roll through my friends, radio & dances & like it. I did not listen to country-western music at all. I held my father's opinion of it. Then I started a dating a youthful man in college that listened to country-western music at all times. He liked the beat of the music & the stories that most of the songs told.

I truly liked him so when we began dating I put up with the music and tuned it out. We then went to a large outdoor concert that featured several of the hottest country western bands. From that point on I was hooked. I found that I also liked the stories the songs told and the music was pleasurable to dance to. At the open-air concert event I met several of my boyfriend's friends. They taught me how to line dance to some of the songs. I slow danced to some ballads and country wedding songs. After college I moved to another city & so I lost touch with my boyfriend. Finally I married my current husband & we're raising our family. I still listen to all manner of music, but every time I hear country-western music I think back to that music show and how I came to appreciate it. I attempt to let my kids experience many different things growing up and try not to influence their evaluations.
