I am often astonished to see the how grand and outlandish the fashion industry has turned into. For some reason it is difficult for me to grasp people and their utter love for clothes. Don't misunderstand me! I like a decent pair of jeans as much as the next guy, but you will not catch me handing over hundreds of dollars for a pair of pants, or even for plus size coats, which can be costly. Forget it. Not that my preferences have any effect on the fashion world whatsoever. Oodles of youthful people are attending fashion styling and merchandising schools to better learn the business. Hey, I can not say that I blame them. There is a great deal of money to be made there. I'm pretty sure Tom Ford is hungry nowadays.

When I asked my teenage daughter what discipline she wanted to pursue, she began rambling on about fashion styling and merchandising. Hmm, big surprise! What teenage girl isn't interested in the style industry? And I thought - hey, perhaps she can get me a good deal on my plus size coats! As far as I can tell, they all go ga-ga over clothes, shoes, and accents. In any case, she began taking a secondary school course in style design and merchandising her senior year. Unfortunately she detested it. Now she is a bit torn about her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the clothing industry, but is naturally worried about regardless of whether she'll like it. I told her to give fashion design and merchandising another shot when she heads off to college next year. And no one said she had to delve into this particular aspect of the fashion world. There are a few choices out there. She could market bathing suits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are end-less.

It is certainly a rough business. If you really want to see how things work, look at the Style net-work every once in while in order to see true fashion designers in their world. Or you can watch that little reality series "The Hills." Even though the main character in this show has plenty of cash coming in from her folks, she's getting a good dose of the fashion design and marketing world.
